itunes 8 - remove genre view in browser

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

hmpf. the first new “feature” i noticed after firing up itunes 8 and checking the grid view for 5 sec. was the lack of the “genre in browser” setting for list view in the preferences. and as there’s nothing to set up anymore in this regard, itunes simply decides to silently turn it on for you again if you used to live without it.
thanks, i totally don’t need it. it has to go.

if you feel the same, tell your terminal:

defaults write com.apple.itunes show-genre-when-browsing -bool FALSE

Live 7 available NOW!

Exactly since 60mins.
If there’s an application the binary punks both love to death than it surely has to be this little beast.
Get it while it’s fresh

photoshop to heavy, gimp to crappy?

try Seashore, which is a stripped down gimp with a native os x interface (i.e. no x11!).

the website claims: “RSS and Atom without the hassle – Shrook is a next-generation news reader that is not only easy to use, but offers advanced features not available to Mac users anywhere else. It supports all versions of RSS and Atom. Oh, and it’s free.”

well, it still has to prove, but after using it for two days now, i do like it. nevertheless, there’s still room for improvements of course.

get it here: http://www.utsire.com/shrook/.

fuse on os x

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

until yesterday there has been a feature i was missing soooo often in os x: the ability to mount a directory on a remote host via ssh. i searched a lot on the net. a real lot. as i knew fuse on linux, i couldn’t believe there was a mac port of it. but definitely no way.

as said before: until yesterday. yesterday was the day when amit singh (author of the great book “Mac OS X Internals: A Systems Approach”) made his port macfuse “A FUSE-Compliant File System Implementation Mechanism for Mac OS X” vailable to the public. go and get it: http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/

great work, thank you amit!

grand perspective

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

no matter how large your current harddisk is, it is **always** almost full. whenever you need some free space immediately and don’t know for sure where to get it from, you need a tiny little tool, that tells you where all the space on your drive(s) is consumed for. instead of paying fifteen bucks too make omni disk sweeper usable, you should take a look at grand perspective, which does the same and gives you a graphical view too.

save your time

amv’s fritz!box is a nice little box, which is quite perfect as the central digital hub for your home (or office, or whatever…). unfortunately it’s missing one feature, which would make it even more useful (or at least more comfortable to use): it’s not possible to create dns record for your lan. of yourse this feature can be added.

memory or money leak?

Monday, August 28th, 2006

yepp, apple always showed some decadence when it came to memory pricing, but today their webshop really let me choke big time:
try ordering one of the latest mac pro desktop machines and throw in 16gigabyte of silicone instead of the 1gigabyte “factory default”. price difference? 5.500 euro credits. i repeat: fivethousandfivehundred. that’s the mac pro base pricing x 2. or 5 macbooks.

or: 4.500 euro credtis difference to the price of 16gigabyte ddr 2 at 667mhz shopped at the supermarket around the corner.

the white stuff seen on the latest macbooks memory slots has to be cocaine, i’m absolutely sure.

witch

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

if you’re like me, there’s at least one feature os x is really missing: the ability to switch between arbitrary windows without touching your mouse. cmd-tab can only switch between applications. exposé also doesn’t satisfy my needs. take a look at witch

quicksilver

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

my #1 must have tool: Quicksilver/.

quicksilver is, what spotlight should be (although spotlight is quite nice already). just go and install it - you will never ever want to miss it again. if you don’t love it from minute one, you didn’t get it. read this fine documentation. you might also wanna read that document, if you love quicksilver and want to explore some of it’s more advanced features.
